How the Instagram Algorithm Works

Updated: Oct 23, 2023

Whether you use Instagram for business or personal use, you've probably wondered how the Instagram algorithm works. It recent years, this all-mighty "algorithm" has been blamed for low engagement rates, not showing your best friend's posts on your feed, and much more...but is the algorithm really out to get you? We don't think so.

So, while the algorithm isn't as evil as it may seem, it is constantly changing and evolving. Let's talk about how the Instagram algorithm works and how to use it to your advantage.

What is the Instagram Algorithm?

The Instagram algorithm is a complex set of rules and calculations that determine how content is displayed on your feed. It's designed to prioritize content that users are most likely to engage with, such as posts that are liked, commented on, and shared. The algorithm takes into account various factors, including the user's interests, their relationship with the poster, and the timeliness of the post.

How the Instagram Algorithm Works

There are three main factors that determine how the Instagram algorithm works:

1. Interest: The algorithm will prioritize content that is relevant and interesting to the user. Instagram determines this by analyzing the user's behavior on the platform, such as the types of content they like, the accounts they follow, and the hashtags or keywords they engage with.

2. Relationship: The algorithm prioritizes content from accounts that the user frequently interacts with, such as posts that the user likes, comments on, and shares.

3. Timeliness: The algorithm also takes into account the timeliness of the post. More recent content is typically prioritized over older content, but this isn't always the case.

Tips to Use the Instagram Algorithm to Your Advantage

Now that you understand how the Instagram algorithm works, here are some tips to help you use it to your advantage:

1. Post high-quality content: Focus on creating authentic and engaging content that is relevant to your target audience.

2. Use hashtags strategically: Use 5-10 hashtags that are relevant to your post and your target audience. Avoid using overly popular hashtags, hashtags that may be limited due to policy violations, or using too many hashtags.

3. Engage with your audience: Respond to comments and messages, and encourage your followers to engage with your content. (Pro tip: set aside some time to engage with your followers' content before & immediately after you post, too!)

4. Post consistently: Post consistently to keep your followers engaged and to ensure that your content is regularly appearing on their feeds. Now, this doesn't mean that you have to post 5 times a day or even 5 times a week. Just create a schedule that works for you and stick with it!

5. Utilize Instagram Stories: Instagram Stories are an effective way to increase engagement and reach on the platform, and are great for content types that don't necessarily need a spot on the feed (ex: flash sales.)

To put it plainly, be SOCIAL on social media! You'll be surprised at how much better your content will perform when your focus is on content, community, and consistency...not on the algorithm.
